If you can’t remember the last time you had a good night’s sleep, it could well be your rickety old bed (not your stressful lifestyle) that’s to blame. We spoke to the best in the bedding business to get this top advice on shopping for a new bed.

1. Invest in quality

Nigel Cairns of Bedworld says, ‘The one golden rule is that you pay for what you get. The more you pay for your new bed or mattress then the better the quality will be.’ A bed will continue to lose its comfort and support year after year so buy the most expensive one that you can afford. A good quality bed should last ten years.

2. The seven year itch

According to the Sleep Council, ‘the critical ’seven year itch’ can be a make or break moment for many marriages and mattresses’. If your mattress is more than seven years old it almost certainly needs replacing. Decide whether you want an open coil, pocket sprung, latex or foam mattress with the help of our Buyer’s guide to mattresses. But first take the Sleep Council’s MOT quiz and assess the state of your sleeping equipment.

3. Roll around

Try the bed in all of the sleeping positions you tend to use, not only on your back,’ says Lucy Benham, assistant buyer for beds at John Lewis. ‘Place your hand in the small of your back and try to move it about. If it moves too easily, the bed may be too hard for you; if it’s a struggle to move your hand, then the bed is too soft. If you can move your hand with just a little resistance, the bed may be just right for you.’ Sleep easy on this Hotel 4-poster bed from John Lewis.

4. To slat or not?

Adam Black, of bed specialists Feather & Black says, ‘Flat wooden slats are the equivalent of placing the mattress on the floor. Always opt for a sprung base, be it a sprung divan or sprung beech slats.’ Foam mattresses are ideal for slatted bases as the springs on other mattresses will push through the slats over time and shorten the life of your mattress. Their Well Base bed (£654.75 for a super-king) combines the comfort of a divan with the contemporary look of a bed base. Superior style and comfort. Stephen George, bedroom furniture buyer for Harrods, is even more specific. ‘If going for slats, we recommend that they should be sprung timber slats, not be more than 6cms apart,’ he says.

5. Supersize me

‘Opt for the largest bed size the room can accommodate’, says Black. ‘Small beds are fine when you are getting on well with whoever you share it with, but tend to seem much smaller at those other times’. The Sleep Council says a regular four foot six double bed gives two sleepers less space than the size of a baby’s cot. But, warns Toby Ash of New Heights, ‘Consider the other furniture you have in the room and ensure that you have sufficient space around the bed to make the room functional. Mark out the size of the bed you are considering on your floor to ensure it is not going to be an obstacle.’ Feather & Black’s regal-looking Highgrove bed from will ensure sweet dreams.

6. Upholstered headboard

‘Solid wooden beds will last longer than veneered ones,’ says Adam Black. ‘Buying upholstered headboards which have removable covers makes sense. You can clean and dry-clean the covers once in a while and you can always give your bedroom a facelift by updating the fabric on the headboard.’ As for the end of the bed, Toby Ash of New Heights says ‘high footboards can look great in large rooms with high ceilings but taller people may find a low footboard more comfortable and less restrictive.’

7. Keep the bed bugs away

Sensitive types should opt for a hypo-allergenic mattress like this king-size Rockingham mattress from The Conran Shop which will help asthma and breathing problems. Their anti-dust mite properties will stop you from sneezing all night long.

8. Matchmaker, matchmaker

How do you match the mattress to the base? ‘These days almost all quality mattresses perform just as well on a slatted base as they would on a sprung divan,’ says Black. However, he warns salesmen will confuse customers by linking mattress performance to a particular base to make a double sale.

9. Guest beds

Guest/folding and storage beds provide flexible solutions for overnight guests. With a small bedroom, it makes sense to use your bed as a secondary storage option. Opt for a Platinum raised inflatable aerobed from John Lewis.

10. Ready built or flat pack?

Make sure you find out from retailers whether they will deliver the bed in one piece or whether you’ll need to put it together yourself. These days there are flat pack options that extend far beyond IKEA. The Bourne double bed from Furniture123 is simple and chic.

Nothing has a bigger impact on the mood and ambiance of a room than color. When it’s time to repaint your master bedroom, color choice is paramount because your goal is to create a room that is restful and conducive to recharging the body and soul. Here are some tips on how to zone in on the right color for this all important paint makeover.

A Restful Canvas
When repainting a bedroom, or any room for that matter, first look at the space with fresh eyes. What is about the room that appeals to you and what would you like to change? Does the room seem like a dark cave, or does it seem cold and impersonal. Then consider the mood you wish to create, your style and what furnishings you intend to keep or replace. While many people automatically think a bedroom should be painted in a light color, a deep color is a good choice for a bedroom because it has a cozy cocooning effect. Even if a room is small, the fact that it looks cluttered may have more to do with too much furniture, or furniture that is too large, than it has to do with color. De-clutter first by getting rid of whatever you don’t need in the bedroom. Clutter will make the room look disorganized and chaotic, and feel anything but restful, no matter what color the walls are painted.

What’s more important in a bedroom than the depth of color is the tone of color. A soothing shade of travertine taupe, while deep, is restful. A shade of mauve, while lighter, can have an electrifying tonal effect that is too energizing or ‘loud’ for a bedroom. Neutral tones and pastels give you many options for bringing in punches of color and style with bedding, accessories, window treatments and furniture.

Before choosing paint color, decide on a look and color scheme to help you narrow your choices. Home interior magazines, books and websites can give you lots of design ideas; keep a file of torn or copies pages or website print sheets of your inspiration room. Once you have a good idea of your ‘dream’ bedroom, find an item that contains the colors and style you are after. A teacup, a pillow, a pillow sham – it doesn’t matter as long as it inspires you and keeps you on track. Take this inspiration piece with you when shopping and it will be easier to achieve your design goal.

Now that you’ve narrowed down your paint choices to two or three options, don’t rely on tiny paint cards from the store to give you an accurate idea of how the finished walls will look. Paint a 2×2 foot square of each color on different walls and live with them a few days in different light conditions to help you make the right choice. You’re going to paint over it anyway, so give yourself a chance to see how you will like living with each potential choice.

Rely on your inspiration and choose bedding, pillows, curtains and window treatments, lamps, area rugs, wall art, candles, a chair or bench and accessories to add the finishing touches to you restful bedroom retreat. Accessories are where you can really bring in contrast or harmony with color, and bring in the finishing touches that make a room personally yours.

While bedroom makeovers often focus on changing paint colors, flooring or carpet, wall art, lighting and window treatments, you can make a drastic change just with bedding. Your main concern when choosing bedding is the color of the walls and flooring. Unless you have a very thematic wall mural painted on a wall, you will be able to bring in almost any style of bedding that appeals to you with success as long as the colors blend or accent harmoniously. This is one of the biggest advantages of using neutrals or light pastels for wall colors; you can change the accents to suit your mood or the season without having to paint or make major changes to the decor.

As an example, if your walls are painted in a light taupe and your floors are neutral as well, you can bring in drama to the bedroom with bedding in shades of red, cream and khaki. With this color scheme, you could go very modern, with a bedspread of modern geometrics, graphic flowers or bold color blocks. Take the same color scheme and make it English country with a block print quilt of flowers in shades of red and rose against cream and khaki with pillows, shams and bed skirt accenting the same colors but in a mix of pattern, including gingham checks, ticking stripes, a contrasting floral pattern and plaids. Or make this color scheme eclectic with a paisley comforter in the same color scheme with bold stripes and accent colors in deep jewel tones.

Then take the same taupe walls and neutral floor colors and go a totally different direction. How about combining sophisticated shimmering crystal blue and deep espresso or chocolate? You could even go with shades of pale blue and green with accents of cream and brown to work against the same wall and floor colors.

Now that you see how you can use the same color scheme to get many different looks, we’ll talk a little about bedding components.

Bedding Basics

• A true bedspread will go all the way to the floor, blocking your view of the area beneath the bed. A quilt or comforter only drapes over three sides of the bed and does not reach to the bottom of the bed; when using a comforter, the box spring below the mattress is visible. Therefore, when choosing a comforter, you should choose a coordinating bed skirt as well. If your bed has side rails and you’d rather not use a skirt, you can use a coordinating fitted sheet to cover the box spring.

• A bed skirt doesn’t have to be an exact match to the comforter. Many bedding companies sell coordinating pieces in the same line: A striped skirt may be coordinated to go with a floral comforter. You can add a little designer flair if you mix up patterns in coordinating colors: solids, stripes, checks, florals, etc. all work together when united by color. You can also coordinate a square pleat bed skirt in a solid color or choose a lacy or embroidered skirt. Lay fabrics and options against each other in the store to mix and match and get a signature look, instead of one that looks pre-packaged.

• Mix and match sheets with your outer pieces. The pillows you sleep on will be hidden under the comforter or bedspread, so purchase a set of pillow shams that fit over an extra set of pillows and brings another coordinating layer to the mix. Make sure that your pillow sizes match your mattress size: king size pillow with a king size bed and queen pillows with a queen size mattress.

• Throw pillows are the icing on the cake. You’ll find them in every shape and size, from round or square, to bolsters, ovals, rectangles and themed shapes. Satin, corduroy, crochet or lace, cotton ticking, needlepoint and unlimited theme designs allow you to top of your new bedroom decor with a luxurious pile of finishing touches.
